Gathering Firewood

While we do have a fireplace in our living room to provide heat in the winter, we use our fire rings for cooking and entertainment year round.

A fire in our backyard attracts guests and serves as a gathering place for family events. Since our grandsons moved in last fall, the number of bonfires has increased dramatically.

In the past, our wood pile lasted most of the summer. Now, that's a two week supply.

Most folks around here toss their fallen limbs onto a brush pile and then do a controlled burn on a calm day. Such a waste!

We drag our limbs to a pile so we can cut them up in one place, before hauling the wood to our woodpile.

Since the grandsons use so much wood, it seems only fair that they should put in the time to cut and stack it. I recommended long pants and long-sleeved shirts, hardhat, eye protection and ear protection to the boys, but Colin has years of experience running chainsaws when he works with his dad, and kids never listen anyway.

Logan is new to running a chainsaw, but he's gotten good at driving the tractor.

In a little over an hour, the boys had the woodpile replenished.

From my experience, it's best to have two good chainsaws (the second for a helper or in case you get the first one stuck), safety equipment including protective chaps, a decent trailer and a way to tow it, and a good wheelbarrow.

After this, I would also recommend a couple of good, strong grandsons.
